  REVIEW:

Aces high, as they say . . . which, actually, is exactly how you need to be to watch this movie – high!

After the huge success of the last mob movie, The Departed, the premise for this movie actually sounded pretty interesting.  A guy in Vegas (Jeremy Piven) is playing both sides of the law and is playing a very dangerous game.  He decides his only hope for coming out on the winning side is to turn on the mob and testify against them.  Of course the mob wants him dead…and the cops want him alive so they have to try to get to him before he gets killed.  Sounds exciting and action filled, that is until you see the movie.  Instead, it just turns out to be a bad story jam packed with gratuitous violence, drugs and nudity.

Smokin’ Aces is essentially a bad Quentin Tarantino rip-off.  So, regardless of whether you love or hate Tarantino movies, you’re probably going to have issues with this.  However, the star power is definitely appealing, and a few of the characters are oddly intriguing.  Unfortunately, though, the action is just so over the top and the story’s so ridiculous that it’s more like watching a cartoon than a drama.   If you happen to have a fetish for freaks and mind-numbing violence, then maybe you’ll like this.  Most, though, will have had more than enough of Smokin’ Aces by the time the absurd climax finally rolls around.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Smokin’ Aces RED.  Stop – really not good!
